Family Law: Eighty-five percent (85%) or more of the firm’s work is in family law: divorce (both complex multi-asset cases and smaller cases), child custody, child support, spousal support, modification of support or custody, domestic violence, prenuptial agreements, antenuptial agreements, etc. The firm specializes in complex family law matters involving substantial marital assets, such as professional practices and construction companies.
Cases involving valuation of professional practices and businesses require a very special expertise, and you need to work with an attorney who not only works closely with a CPA, but the CPA must have: (1) credential known as CVA (Certified Valuation Analyst), and (2) substantial court room experience to stand up to the expert cross-examination. Ask your lawyer the name of his CVA and ask the CVA how many times he/she has actually testified on the witness stand under cross-examination. In California your business is usually at least partly community property; likewise is your pension plan. In the last 15 years, Basil Chapman has not lost a child custody case which has actually gone to trial, and is experienced with direct and cross-examination of psychologists.
Civil Litigation: Civil litigation lawsuits usually involving contract disputes, business and real estate matters. We consider taking those on a case-by-case basis.
Appeals: The firm considers taking civil and family law issues before California appellate courts on a case-by-case bases.
